Teen YouTuber Hannah Meloche seems to have everything. Millions of people hang on her every word, and she’s handsomely rewarded for her work. But the vlogger began feeling the pressure in October 2019 after she was slammed over some off-color commentary in one of her videos. Her reaction to the criticism, though, came as something of a surprise.
Meloche has gathered followers in the millions on her two YouTube channels and on Instagram. And those fans have turned into remuneration for her in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. She even gets paid close to $3,000 for posts on Instagram that have endorsements. But with success comes a newfound responsibility for the teenage vlogger, too.
As Meloche explained to the website Buzzfeed News in November 2019, her work does bring a cost. She said, “Being an influencer as people like to call us… it’s all up to us how people see us. We can put out content that best portrays us in real life and put it out online for people to enjoy. The downside of all of this is the pressure: the pressure to not mess up or say anything that’s going to offend anyone.”
When private videos by Meloche and fellow YouTuber Summer Mckeen, in which they said some cruel things about a fan, were leaked, there was widespread outrage. Hate and nasty comments poured in, and even a video apologizing for her behavior didn’t seem to have any effect on the people who thought that Meloche should be “canceled.” Finally, she released a video titled “I don’t know anymore” to share her feelings.
Meloche explains in the YouTube clip that she feels that she has to disclaim all her content. She says, “I feel like I can’t make the videos I want to make because people don’t like me, and people don’t want to watch my videos.” With that, the vlogger then dissolves into tears. She says that she’s thankful that people had expressed their worries about her, and she promises some changes. Now she will not pick up her phone quite as often, and she’ll get some therapy too.
